Three key adjectives:
- Apologetic
- Insecure
- Passionate
Influential Events:
- First Poems & Fighting with Natsuki:
From the start of the game, Yuri comes off as quiet, mature, eloquent and a little bit awkward at times. It’s clear that she’s the bookish stereotype and one that has a hard time making social connections and fights with some of her insecurities and self-worth. She’s seen as well-spoken but shy and desires acceptance in a fierce way.
After exchanging their poems for the initial time, it is clear to the protagonist just how different all the girls really are from each other. An argument sparks between Yuri and Natsuki about the quality of their poems and it is the first time that Yuri steps up to defend herself and her opinions and she gets quite heated about it. After being accused of being condescending she states that she’s spent a lot of time establishing her writing style and that she is proud of her work. As the fight escalates, she goes out of her way to argue back and defend herself which is the first time that we see that Yuri isn’t as much of a quiet and shy pushover as it might first appear. She’s fully capable of speaking her mind and expressing her dislikes or passion for the things important to her.
The fight is de-escalated with Sayori and Monika’s help but she also states that she uses her writing to express emotions and complex concepts and refuses to agree with Natsuki’s simple approach. She learns that some of the girls are very different from her in this literature club and that she will defend herself and her style if she needs to. It helps the protagonist define each girl’s personality and, in this case, Yuri’s beyond the “shy bookish type.”
Later she realizes how she acted in her fight with Natsuki and embarrassed she decides to sit alone and stew. When the main protagonist approaches, she expresses her embarrassment for her outburst and assumes the protagonist dislikes her for it and later she attempts to apologize and make it up to Natsuki by accepting to write about beaches together. This shows that Yuri does have insecurity about being disliked, feels bad about frustrating others and being the odd one out. She often feels the need to apologize after her outbreaks.
It can be noted here that Yuri’s argumentative side can be foreshadowing for her later negative outbreaks in the game.
- Crafting for the Festival:
When the festival assignments come around the protagonist will find Yuri coming over to work together on making some decorations for the school festival. The day starts off with Yuri exclaiming that she thinks the protagonist might have picked her to work with just to be nice and not to actually spend time with her. She feels the need to apologize to both him and Natsuki for this.
Yuri’s insecurities about being useless or the protagonist not actually wanting to spend time with her are soon quelled when Yuri brings out a knife in order to cut some of the decorations. Here, Yuri exclaims that she thinks knives are beautiful in their own ways and she asks if she seems strange for that. She finds it hard to share her hobbies with others because she’s worried about seeming weird or unhealthy about them.
Another item to note in this event is that Yuri displays this fascination with knives and it is implied that she causes self-harm to herself due to this fascination and to help her cope with her sometimes overwhelming emotions. She is nearly caught by the main protagonist as she pulls her sleeve down after being alone. This is one of the the first hints at the potential that Yuri already has a fixation and self-harms on top of her insecurities.
After an accident with the knife, Yuri goes as far as takes the protagonist’s cut finger in her mouth to staunch the bleeding. She questions herself if she’s being strange but when the protagonist reacts positively it helps her become more comfortable with herself.
Overall, this is important in helping Yuri know that her insecurities aren’t something she needs to let bother her because the protagonist is showing a clear interest in her. It is also heavy foreshadowing of Yuri’s underlying more negative personality traits such as her fixation, self-harm and desire to be accepted.
- Sayori's Death & End of Act 1:
Unfortunately, certain events take a turn for the worse and Yuri’s character is deeply changed for it. After Sayori’s suicide, the game is drastically changed and Yuri’s programming is altered to heighten some of her more enigmatic and passionate behaviours. Sayori’s death is the pinpoint event in completely up-heaving Yuri’s personality. Scenes that were normal and sweet with Yuri before now have Yuri breathing heavier, staring at the protagonist and being generally more aggressive about spending time with the main character than before.
These changes are entirely due to the fact that Monika has changed Yuri’s programming and has turned up Yuri’s personality traits to make her passion change to obsession and her insecurity to intense desire to be accepted. While Yuri was a normal quiet girl with simple insecurities, shy and apologetic, it’s Monika’s tinkering that has these personality traits intensify for the worse.
As an entirety, the end of Act 1 marks the start of Yuri’s downfall. Listed below are three events with comparisons between Act 1 and Act 2 and how Yuri's traits are changed in each of them due to Monika’s tinkering.
- Reading with the Protagonist:
In Act 1 Yuri and the main protagonist share some time together reading a book. Yuri states that it is a horror story that she likes and she goes on a ramble about how much she likes these types of stories. She catches herself rambling and apologizes to the protagonist. Here, Yuri notes that she has a problem with letting stories and ideas fill her head to the point where she forgets to pay attention to anything else and asks the protagonist to stop her if she says something weird. This portrays once again that Yuri has the potential to let things take over her mind and for her to get carried away and is very passionate about what she likes. The two share closeness while reading the book and Yuri seems to genuinely enjoy herself as they exchange gentle touches and looks with each other, showing Yuri’s soft side as well. And all the while Yuri is worried she’ll second guess herself or make an awkward move towards the protagonist. She just wants to seem likable and sweet.
In Act 2 when the same event happens it is changed by Monika’s tampering in certain ways. Yuri begins by being a little more forceful than the first time in asking the protagonist to read with her. She notes that “[her] heart just won’t stop pounding for some reason.” She explains the same horror storybook to the protagonist but this time it is accompanied by glitches in her text dialogue box when she’s explaining how she gets lost in the stories. This is the first glitch showing that Yuri’s passion is slowing turning into an unhealthy obsession instead. As the scene continues it’s noted that Yuri is much more fidgety than the first time especially when the protagonist compares her to the main character in the book. Her breathing is heavier and her eyes are wider than the first time this event is viewed.
Soon enough Yuri leaves the room in a rush and Monika approaches the protagonist saying that sometimes Yuri does this. But as this does not appear to happen this way in the first act it seems to imply that Monika is trying to convince the protagonist that this is a normal behaviour for Yuri when it was indeed Monika who made her this way by starting to push her already existing personality traits up a few notches to make her seem odd.
Note: This where Yuri’s canonpoint will be in-game. “Glitching” isn’t possible in the confines of the game and Monika won’t be able to manipulate her but she will still be only slightly tamper with personality-wise from the first time Monika tinkered. (please let me know if you would like this changed)
- Making Tea:
In the same vein, there is a moment in the game where Yuri and the protagonist make tea before reading together and Monika interjects. At this time Yuri tells Monika to mind her own business and that she’s only trying to include the main protagonist in more club activities. She then leaves the room frustrated and flustered realizing she spoke without really thinking. The protagonist says that Yuri just seems to amplify things in her head until it comes out of her mouth because "[her] mind turns a light shower into a hurricane." This expresses Yuri’s overactive mind, how her words can get ahead of her sometimes and that her emotions can be quite intense.
In Act 2 when the same event happens Yuri merely finds a way to excuse herself to get the water for the tea on her own after getting overly excited when the protagonist agrees to spend time with her. She takes too long this time around and the protagonist goes to look for her only to find Yuri cutting her arm with a knife. This not only confirms that Yuri does use self-harm as a way to cope with her overwhelming feelings and emotions but also that Monika has intensified this trait thus making her bypass her moment with the protagonist completely to do this to herself instead because she cannot ignore the need to do so. The moment glitches badly and skips right over to the next scene.
This changed scene expresses how Yuri usually feels apologetic or frustrated for the way her mind overreacts or works and wants to work through those things but with Monika's hands in the programming she's pushed to be erratic and flustered instead to a point that she needs an immediate outlet for her stressed emotions in the form of her self-harm.
- Picking Yuri for the Sunday Event:
When it comes time to divvy up projects for the festival another argument breaks when the protagonist has to pick which girl to work with. Both Natsuki and Yuri claim that they would benefit from the protagonist’s help and in the end, it has Natsuki upset when Yuri is picked.
Here it shows that Yuri is looking forward to it but also feels apologetic towards Natsuki for upsetting her afterwards. She quickly tries to apologize for the argument and compliments Natsuki’s cupcakes and tries to cheer her up. The two girls apologize to each other and make amends. While Yuri is able to stand up for herself, she does feel bad when she upsets her friends and truly values them. She often apologizes like this, after she realizes she’s done something to upset someone.
In Act 2 the repeat version of this scene has Yuri display immediate manic anger after Monika forces the player to pick her. She is no longer worried about hurting her friends and calls Monika jealous and crazy and dismisses Natsuki completely. This displays Yuri’s apologetic side to be completely gone by now and instead replaced with this selfish frantic desire for the protagonist to pick her over the others. Once again this is due to Monika pushing her programming to the final limit to make her seem undesirable to the protagonist.

Chosen path: Warlock
7 Abilities:
- Otherworldly Patron; a devil or eldritch monster
- Create Familiar
- Pact of the Blade
- Pact of the Tome; Burning Hands (sorcerer)
- Necromantic Touch
- Eldritch Blast
- Hideous Laughter
Why this path?:
Thematically, it suits Yuri to be a warlock because she admires dark fantasy and Lovecraftian styles and aesthetics. She is a studious person and would easily absorb the knowledge and knowhow and thirst for everything relating to her powers and her patron. Seeing as she is sensitive and slightly mentally unstable, she would easily be drawn to the spiritual aspects, the power, darker magic and the ancient knowledge.
She would more than likely be very obsessed with whichever patron she would pick. Something to fixate on would make her very happy. Being able to create a familiar will make her obsessive about making it resemble the main protagonist, choosing to make it a mini replica or a wind-up doll of the one she loves most. Her fascination with knives and sharp things compliments Pact of the Blade. Necromantic Touch would be something she would be greatly interested in and she would experiment with it once she became used to it all. She could easily use Hideous Laughter to distract others because of her shyness or accidentally trigger it when she’s having a manic episode and wants people to look away from her.
